Kate Barnes's Bio:

Kate Barnes was born and raised in the Midwest and educated at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; and the Cleveland Institute of Art. She completed formal art training in Japan and maintains a steady influence from that culture in her paintings of Florida. She has lived and worked for decades in an old farmhouse in Cross Creek and is the owner of South Moon Studios, her freelance art business.

In the early 1980's, Cross Creek, Orange Lake, and Lake Lochloosa were threatened by a proposal for a massive housing development encompassing the community of Cross Creek and it's pristine and sensitive environment. A group of residents formed the Friends of Cross Creek, a grassroots environmental group led by Kate Barnes, that was eventually successful in the preservation of a historic community and the conservation of over 50 square miles of "real Florida."

Barnes credits her group's successes in Cross Creek to the hundreds of individuals who volunteered their time, expertise and funds over the long and ongoing process; and to the respected organizations such as the Florida Defenders of the Environment and the Alachua County Trust that provided mentoring, and persevered through the arduous acquisition processes. Barnes is an original and ongoing supporter of the work of the Conservation Trust of Florida and is donating part of the proceeds from the sale of her work represented in the CTF Online Gallery.
