Creating a corridor for paddlers and wildlife and a buffer for Avon park Air Force Range

Conservation Florida is working with partners in the area, including Avon Park Air Force Range, to acquire conservation easements within the watershed. We’re currently working on the protection of over 1,200 acres of ranchland along Arbuckle Creek and located adjacent to Avon Park Air Force Range in Highlands County.

The protected lands will form a wildlife corridor and offer a buffer of open space around the military base. The habitat is suitable for species such as the Florida scrub jay, Florida black bear, Eastern indigo snake, and gopher tortoise.

The watershed is located on the eastern edge of the ancient Lake Wales Ridge and adjacent to Arbuckle Creek.
